This species resembles the
Shepherd's fritillary, from which it can be a little larger. The basic color of the wings is bright orange, brighter than the Sheperd`s fritillary. In addition, the pattern on the wings are more pronounced and have a somewhat stronger contrast, while the shape of the hind wings is distinctive, cut off almost at a right angle. And the eyes are much better expressed in the Balkan fritillary and are always larger and with yellow dots in the middle.. This butterfly can only be found on highland pastures and meadows. The caterpillars feed on a violets that is commonly called "day and night"(
Viola tricolor). In Serbia they can be found only in the Kosovo mountaisa and Mokra gora. This species inabits the Alps, the Balkan mountains. and a little part of Turkey. There are three described subspecies, and the Serbian populations belong to the nomotypical form
B. g. graeca.
